Re: Information about the May Institute.
Dear Members,
The Union and Superintendent agreed that schools wishing to move
forward with the May Institute Discipline Program must have the
support of 80% of the teachers. This support will be determined
by a secret ballot vote.
The Union has not taken a position on the program. We seek collaboration
and cooperation. In order to make an informed decision, we encourage
the membership to listen to the presentation and read the literature
prior to voting.
The presentation will most likely take place during the February
Professional Development.

May Institute's Positive Schools, a nationally recognized school-wide
behavior support program, is implemented in a Providence public
school. The program improves a school's climate by providing training
and consultation on effective disciplinary practices and student
social skills development.
By teaching, encouraging and supporting positive behavior,
Positive Schools fosters an environment conducive to learning. Program
outcomes include significant increases in on-task engagement and
academic performance, as well as dramatic decreases in disruptive
behavior, office referrals and suspensions.
The program's research-based behavior support strategies
have produced positive changes in K-12 schools and districts across
the country.
