ARTICLE IV
WORKING CONDITIONS
A: DISCIPLINE CODE
1. The Superintendent agrees to distribute a copy of the student code of discipline to each teacher and student on or before September 30th of each year.
2. The Superintendent and the Lawrence Teachers’ Union agree to form a Joint Committee on Student Discipline for the purpose of monitoring the implementation of the student discipline code. The Committee will review data on discipline code infractions from all schools and use this data to make suggestions for additional supports that may be needed to assist schools in dealing with specific problem areas and ways to improve the discipline code and its implementation.
The Joint Committee on Student Discipline shall consist of four members appointed by the Superintendent and four members appointed by the President of the Lawrence Teachers’ Union. The Committee shall seek input from administrators, teachers, support staff from the Lawrence Public Schools, students, parents, and community members.
This Committee shall submit an annual report with recommendations for actions to the Superintendent, School Committee, and the Lawrence Teachers’ Union by the first Wednesday in May, beginning in May, 2005.
3. The Committee agrees to uniformly apply the student discipline code subject to the statutory and regulatory rights of students.
B: WORK YEAR
The work year shall be 183 days, of which 180 days shall be student contact days. The last day of school shall be a full instructional day for students. Three days, directly preceding the first instructional day for students, shall be dedicated to daylong professional development activities for all personnel covered by this Agreement, except that:



1. bargaining unit members shall not be required to work on the Friday before Labor Day and
2. a minimum of three hours on the third of these three days shall be allotted to teachers to prepare their classrooms or to deal with other issues related to the opening of the school year.

Personnel covered by this agreement shall report for duty three days before the opening of schools for students and shall remain in the schools sufficiently long enough to perform those individual tasks necessary for the proper closing of schools.
